International Training Activity
Since its establishment in 2003, the Kawasaki Aortic Center has been actively engaged in international exchange, including hosting foreign students and visitors, as well as participating in international conferences. Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus, the acceptance of foreign students was suspended after 2020, but we have resumed these activities since July 2022 following changes in entry restrictions.
As of February 2024, three individuals from the Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan are diligently acquiring surgical skills as clinical fellows. In addition to long-term fellows, we also accept many short-term visitors and students (individuals and groups). Last year, physicians, nurses, and clinical engineers from many countries such as Thailand, France, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, China, and Ukraine visited our center, engaging in information and opinion exchanges regarding surgical observation and perioperative management.
Furthermore, we conducted on-site activities such as Cadaver Training at Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital in Taiwan and surgical instruction at Taichung Veterans General Hospital. Since November 2022, we have started the KAS: Kawasaki Aortic Surgery conference, holding online conferences every Monday. Physicians from around the world participate, actively discussing cases and sharing knowledge and opinions.
We aim to continue such active international exchanges and contribute to the advancement of aortic treatment worldwide.
International student since 2008.

When the number of cases increase and a good infrastructure is given to competent staff, the surgical outcomes will no doubt be superb. These are what KAC have, competent staff doing their share in the Aortic team the best they can. Its coupled by a good infrastructure and a caseload second to none.
KAC is a highly specialized center with very competent staff working together with a purpose, to deliver the best Aortic care possible. Emphasis is not only on the technical side of Aortic Surgery but also the patient preparation and post operative care. Our Aortic Database is one of the most robust that I know off. The Center has a long track record of doing complicated Aortic procedures in a high level. From its humble beginnings in the early part of the millennium, it blossomed as one of the best Aortic Centers there is.
I came here because I want to learn Aortic Surgery, the KAC style. My teachers and seniors here are very friendly and willing to share their expertise with me all the time. They helped me adjust to my life away from home. Teachers may go as far as having illustrations and schema written when we discuss to make sure the young surgeons understand the teacher’s topic. For all these, I am very thankful.
I personally consider open aortic surgery as the standard treatment for aortic disease, but it is one of the difficult cardiovascular surgeries which needs much experience for operating team. To perform aortic operation by myself, I must learn from expert surgeons in one of the well-established aortic centers.
I have known about KAC since the past 6 years when Dr. Oshima gave a presentation in Thai Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery annual meeting and made the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons of Thailand (STST) in 2017.
After I graduated Cardiovascular and thoracic training in 2018, I decided for training in KAC, and eventually started working in July 2023 to until December 2023.
KAC has many open aortic cases with a variety of diseased stages and conditions which provide me with lots of experience in aortic surgery. There are many sessions for operative planning, discussion, and decision for every patient. One of the beneficial conferences is KAS conference, a weekly online international conference, which provides surgical expertise sharing from different experienced center and, also, continuity of learning for difficult and uncommon aortic surgery after graduation.
During my training, I experienced about 150 open aortic surgeries in 6 months, and, among these cases, I had several chances to be one of assistants, a total number is approximately 100 operations.
I am very grateful to become one of the trainees in Kawasaki Aortic Center.
