International Training Activity
Since its establishment in 2003, Kawasaki Aortic Center (KAC) has actively engaged in international exchange by accepting trainees and visitors from overseas and participating in international conferences.
As of January 2025, a total of three doctors from the Philippines and Taiwan are working hard to learn surgical techniques as clinical fellows. In addition to long-term fellows, we have accepted many short-term visitors (individuals and groups) as well, and not only physicians but also nurses and clinical engineers have visited our center to observe surgeries, share techniques and knowledge on perioperative management, and exchange opinions.
In 2023, our center began to directly visit hospitals in Taiwan, such as Taichung Veterans General Hospital and Taipei Veterans General Hospital, to provide short-term surgical teaching. Furthermore, in December 2024, as a new attempt, in cooperation with STST (The Society of Thoracic Surgeons of Thailand), with whom we have an MOU called the Visiting Surgeon Program, we have started a project to promote KAS: Kawasaki Aortic Surgery by sending our center's doctors (independent surgeons) to Thailand on a yearly basis.
Since November 2022, we started an online conference called KAS conference every Monday. We actively discuss cases and share opinions and knowledge with participating doctors from around the world (Taiwan, Thailand, India, Ukraine), mainly from our center.
Through participation in international conferences and invitations, last year we had the opportunity to promote KAC's activities to many surgeons at conferences in Thailand, Taiwan, the United States, Tunisia, Hong Kong, Romania, Ukraine (on line), and the Philippines.
We hope to keep on this active international exchange and contribute to the development of aortic surgery around the world.

When the number of cases increase and a good infrastructure is given to competent staff, the surgical outcomes will no doubt be superb. These are what KAC have, competent staff doing their share in the Aortic team the best they can. Its coupled by a good infrastructure and a caseload second to none.
KAC is a highly specialized center with very competent staff working together with a purpose, to deliver the best Aortic care possible. Emphasis is not only on the technical side of Aortic Surgery but also the patient preparation and post operative care. Our Aortic Database is one of the most robust that I know off. The Center has a long track record of doing complicated Aortic procedures in a high level. From its humble beginnings in the early part of the millennium, it blossomed as one of the best Aortic Centers there is.
I came here because I want to learn Aortic Surgery, the KAC style. My teachers and seniors here are very friendly and willing to share their expertise with me all the time. They helped me adjust to my life away from home. Teachers may go as far as having illustrations and schema written when we discuss to make sure the young surgeons understand the teacher’s topic. For all these, I am very thankful.
I personally consider open aortic surgery as the standard treatment for aortic disease, but it is one of the difficult cardiovascular surgeries which needs much experience for operating team. To perform aortic operation by myself, I must learn from expert surgeons in one of the well-established aortic centers.
I have known about KAC since the past 6 years when Dr. Oshima gave a presentation in Thai Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery annual meeting and made the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons of Thailand (STST) in 2017.
After I graduated Cardiovascular and thoracic training in 2018, I decided for training in KAC, and eventually started working in July 2023 to until December 2023.
KAC has many open aortic cases with a variety of diseased stages and conditions which provide me with lots of experience in aortic surgery. There are many sessions for operative planning, discussion, and decision for every patient. One of the beneficial conferences is KAS conference, a weekly online international conference, which provides surgical expertise sharing from different experienced center and, also, continuity of learning for difficult and uncommon aortic surgery after graduation.
During my training, I experienced about 150 open aortic surgeries in 6 months, and, among these cases, I had several chances to be one of assistants, a total number is approximately 100 operations.
I am very grateful to become one of the trainees in Kawasaki Aortic Center.
